Academic, Cultural and Scientific Visas

Last Update: 30-Jul-2010

ACADEMIC, CULTURAL and SCIENTIFIC (Temporary One) visas are meant for non-Brazilian experts and authorities in particular fields of knowledge traveling to Brazil to make presentations at meetings or to engage in teaching, research and other specialized activities. This kind of visa can also apply to undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate students to pursue academic work in Brazil, and to professional or missionary trainees. Temporary one visas are furthermore appropriate for non-professional athletes under 21 years of age wishing to submit to intensive training in Brazil, volunteers and social workers.

Although allowances for travel and living costs are broadly admitted, a temporary one visa does not contemplate its holder being paid a salary from Brazilian sources.

Requirements for a temporary one visa, which differ according to the length of stay in Brazil and the activities to be engaged in while in Brazil, are as follows:

1.     Your Passport (the actual document, not a photocopy), valid for a minimum of six months from the date of intended arrival in Brazil. This requirement has to do with the expiration date of your passport. The passport cannot expire within 6 months of the date of your arrival in Brazil. (i.e.: if you apply for a visa in April, your travel itinerary shows arrival on June 1st, 2006 and your passport expires on Nov 10th, 2006, then this passport is not acceptable for visa issuance and you will need to obtain a new passport before applying for your Brazilian visa).
