DEATH REGISTRATION AND/OR
TRANSFER OF HUMAN REMAINS TO BRAZIL

IN ORDER TO REGISTER A BRAZILIAN CITIZEN’S DEATH, a relative or family’s representative must come to the Consulate General of Brazil with the original Death Certificate, the deceased’s Brazilian passport or ID, and must be able to provide the following information related to the deceased: address, occupation, widow or widower’s name, names and birth of children, if any, if a will or any assets were left and if the deceased was eligible to vote. The person in charge of the registration must bring his personal Brazilian ID and will be asked to sign the registration. The registration is free of charge.

IN CASE OF TRANSFERENCE OF HUMAN REMAINS TO BRAZIL, besides the registration above mentioned, the Brazilian authorities require the legalization of the following documents by the Consulate General of Brazil: 

1. Official disposition, removal or transportation permit;
2. Three copies of the Certificate of Death;
3. Embalming certificate, duly notarized and certified by the County Clerk or the Secretary of State; and
4. Statement of non-contagious disease issued by the proper local authority, duly notarized and certified by the County Clerk or the Secretary of State.

AS FOR CREMATION, the legalization of the following documents are required by the Brazilian authorities:

1. Certificate of Cremation, signed by the Crematory official before a notary public. Then, the notary's signature has to be certified by the Secretary of State or County Clerk;  and,
2. One certified copy of the Certificate of Death.

*Brazilian authorities also require that the ashes be contained in a sealed and insulated urn.
