To have legal effects in Brazil, all documents issued abroad must be authenticated by a Brazilian Consular Office.

The Consulate General of Brazil in Boston can only authenticate documents that have been signed within this Consulate’s jurisdiction.

Procedure for authentication:

Submit to the Brazilian Consular Office the document to be authenticated, along with the fee payment.

School documents: affidavits or transcript of records can be authenticated at the Consulate General of Brazil provided all pages of the documentation carry the school’s raised seal, or the school's rubber stamp and the Principal's, Guidance Counselor's or Registrar's signature.

In the case of diplomas and certificates only the original can be authenticated. For transcripts and affidavits, a copy is acceptable for authentication, provided the guidelines described above are followed.

School documents can be presented to the Consulate directly by the interested party, by a third party, or be sent by mail. Please see below in "Processing by mail".

The consular fee for the authentication of school documents is US$5.00 per piece, up to a maximum of 3 pieces per person. Beyond that quantity, the documents can be joined into one dossier for the total cost of US$15.00. The payment must be made in cash or money order, issued by the United States Post Office.

Please note that, to have legal effects in Brazil, school documents must be translated in Brazil by a public sworn translator, after its authentication by the Consulate General of Brazil.

Official documents (i.e., birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, marriage certificates) must be a true copy, issued by the competent government office.

All other documents (i.e., power-of-attorney, commercial bids, contracts, agreements, invoices, donation letters, and any other papers) must be signed before a notary public registered with the Consulate General of Brazil in Boston. Click here to see the list. Documents notarized by a non-registered notary public must have his or her signature verified by the County clerk or by the Secretary of State (addresses below).

School documents: $5.00 per document

Donation letters: no fee

Photocopies:

Photocopies made outside of the Consular Office written in a language other than Portuguese: US$ 10.00 per page.

Photocopies made by the Consular Office written in a language other than Portuguese: US$15.00 per page.

Photocopies made outside of the Consular Office written in Portuguese: US$ 5.00 per page.

Photocopies made by the Consular Office written in Portuguese: US$10.00 per page.

All other documents: $20.00

Method of payment:

The Consular Office will accept payment in cash or money orders ONLY , issued by the United States Post Office, made payable to the “Consulate General of Brazil”.

Processing by mail:

Please enclose along with the documents payment in Money Order and a self-addressed pre-paid envelope for the return of documents (United States Postal Services ONLY). This Consulate will NO LONGER ACCEPT  courier services such as UPS, FEDEX, DHL, and others, for the return of documents. This Consulate will ONLY ACCEPT self-addressed stamped envelopes from the USPS - United States Postal Services.

The Consulate will not be held responsible for loss or delays of documents.
