Missionary or Temporary Seven Visas

MISSIONARY (Temporary Seven) visas may be granted to non-Brazilian citizens (and accompanying dependents) intending to work in Brazil for or on behalf of an entity of consecrated life or a religious order.

Requests for a MISSIONARY visa require the following initial set of documents to be submitted for approval by the Consulate (many of which will need legalization):

  • a temporary seven visa request form in Portuguese filled out by the entity's Brazilian branch and verified with a legal representative's notarized signature;

  • certified evidence of powers conferred to the mentioned legal representative, including powers to invite foreign missionaries and to request the corresponding entry visas;

  • certified copies of the charter ("ata de constituição") and bylaws ("estatutos") of the entity's Brazilian branch;

  • deed of maintenance and repatriation prepared at a public notary's office in favor of the applicant (and accompanying dependents), signed by the Brazilian branch's legal representative;

  • a notarized commitment from the entity in the applicant's country of origin to cover the above maintenance and repatriation costs;

  • a photocopy of the relevant pages of the applicant's passport;

  • a recent transcript of the applicant's resume;

  • a copy of a certificate of ordination or other proof of graduation in theology;

  • long form copies of birth certificates of any accompanying family members and of a marriage certificate, if applicable;

  • "Good Conduct Certificate" (the original form must be legalized by the Consulate at US$20.00 per document) issued by the State Police Department with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence;

  • a signed commitment from the missionary only to work in areas inhabited by indigenous tribes after obtaining a permit from FUNAI.

After approval, the Consulate will request the applicant to present the following supporting documents for each person in his/her party:

  • a valid (not expiring within 6 months) passport or permit to reenter the US;

  • two filled out copies of a visa application form provided by the Consulate;

  • two recent passport-type photographs.

     *     Non-US citizens are additionally requested to present one of the following:
          - a US resident alien card or
          - a valid entry visa to the US.

With validity extending up to 12 months, a Missionary visa is subject to a consular fee of US$ 70.00, plus applicable fees (see section Entry Visas General Information).
