PETS AND PLANTS

In order to be admitted into Brazil, pets and plants must be accompanied by the following documents:

Plants:

Phytosanitary certificate issued by the competent local authority:

USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ)

Birds (parrots, parakeets):

Certificate issued by the local office of the USDA stating that the bird is free of psittacosis.

Cats and Dogs:

International Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian and duly stamped by the local office of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) attesting:

  1. That the pet is in good health one week prior to boarding;

  2. That no contagious disease was verified in the area of origin in the 40-day period prior to boarding; and

  3. That the pet was vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before boarding and no more than 12 months.

IMPORTANT:

Although the International Health Certificate has a validity, it should be stamped by the USDA within ten(10) days of the departure of the animal.

Sanitary and Phytosanitary certificates must be authenticated by the Consular Office. The fee for authentication is US$ 20.00.  Payment can be made in cash or money order payable to “Consulate General of Brazil”.  Personal or company checks and credit cards are NOT accepted.

Please enclose along with the documents payment in Money Order and a self-addressed pre-paid envelope for the return of documents (United States Postal Services ONLY). This Consulate will NO LONGER ACCEPT  courier services such as UPS, FEDEX, DHL, and others, for the return of documents. This Consulate will ONLY ACCEPT self-addressed stamped envelopes from the USPS - United States Postal Services.

There is no quarantine for pets entering Brazil.

 

The admittance of other kinds of animals is subject to previous authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil.

Wild Animal Pets:

 

An import license must be obtained with IBAMA, to authorize the entering of such animals in the country. The interested parties may address message directly to that organization, by emailing linhaverde@ibama.gov.br, to receive orientation as to the appropriate procedures in the case.
