Transit Visa

Last Update: 26-Mar-2010

In order to enter Brazil legally, even if only for a few hours, you will need a visa. However, if you are only in transit through a Brazilian airport on your way to another country and do not plan to leave the transit area of the airport, you won’t need a visa, although it would be advisable to apply for one, considering that it is always possible that an international flight may be delayed or even cancelled due to unforeseen reasons and you might be interested in leaving the airport transit area. Please note that the following information applies to citizens residing in the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, which is the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Brazil in Boston. If you reside in any other state, you must apply at the Consulate of Brazil of that geographical area. To check other jurisdictions follow the link: http://www.consulatebrazil.org/jurisd.htm

A TRANSIT visa is meant for non-Brazilian citizens stopping in Brazil on the way to a third country for longer than normal travel connections would require. The issuance of a TRANSIT visa requires the following supporting documents:

·         a valid (not expiring within 6 months) passport already containing a visa for the onward country of destination, if needed;

·         Visa application. Please fill out electronically in the following website: https://scedv.serpro.gov.br . Once you have done it, print it out and sign it;

·         one recent passport-type photograph;

·         a ticket or itinerary print-out from a carrier or travel agent attesting to the acquisition of the ticket, with flight or vessel identification and dates of transit through Brazil and onward destination.

A TRANSIT visa allows for a single entry of a maximum of ten days and is subject to a consular fee varying from US$20.00 to US$150.00 plus the applicable fees (see section Entry Visas General Information).
